Statesville Christian Head Basketball Coach J.D. Johnson is pleased to announce that former NCAA All American and professional basketball player Danny Gathings has joined the staff as his assistant varsity basketball coach.
The Lions varsity basketball team is off to a 5-0 start under Coach Johnson and Coach Gathings and look forward to playing one of the toughest schedules in school history. Over Christmas the team heads to Myrtle Beach to compete in the Carolina Forest Panther Classic which will feature some of the top teams and players in the Southeast. In January the Lions will take on Davidson Day, Southlake Christian, Northside Christian, and The Burlington School, as well as the SPAA Conference including North Carolina powers Carmel Christian, Victory Christian and United Faith.

Danny Gathings was an All Conference, All State, and All American high school player for Parkland High School in Winston Salem, NC where is was named the MVP of his state championship team. Danny chose Virginia Tech to play his college ball.
Gathings transferred to High Point University following his freshman year and spent from 2002-05 playing for the Panthers. Gathings became High Point’s first-ever men’s basketball All-American in 2003-04 when he led the team with 15.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. He was also named the Big South Player of the Year that season earning First-Team All-Big South honors and was MVP of the Big South Tournament. He also earned an All-Conference selection in 2002-03.
Gathings led the team in scoring and rebounding in 2002-03 as well when he averaged 18.7 points per game with 7.6 boards. He also led the team in crashing the boards as a senior when he grabbed 6.6 per contest.
The four-time Big South Player of the Week honoree finished his HPU career with 1,261 points, which ranks him in the top 20 all-time on High Point’s scoring list.
Danny was named to the Big South All Decade Team when the conference celebrated its’ 30th anniversary.
In 2004 Danny gained national recognition as NCAA National Sportsman of the Year when
he traveled to Liberty University and in front of the entire student body at convocation handed his 2004 Tournament MVP award to Larry Blair. Danny had won the MVP award in the Big South Tournament but felt that Larry had deserved the award more after Liberty had defeated HPU in the championship game. His selfless show of sportsmanship is a glimpse into who Danny Gathings is as a person.
Danny Gathings played several years of professional basketball following college. In Finland’s Korisliiga, he played for Aura Basket Turku in 2005–06. The next three seasons were spent in Sweden’s Basketligan playing for Sallen Basket and Uppsala Basket, respectively, before finishing his career off in Finland once again with Korihait.
Coach Gathings is a committed Christian and his favorite Scripture is John 3: 16
For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.
Coach Gathings lives in Statesville with his wife Dawn and his children, Izaiah 16, Jasaiah 13, Peyton 6 and Aiden 6 months. Coach Gathings is the Sports and Family Program Director at the Statesville YMCA.
